When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.” (Judges 6:12)
Gideon was a judge and a mighty man of war in Israel. He was the youngest of a poor family from the tribe of Manasseh. God called him to deliver Israel from the oppression of the Midianites.
God had called Israel to be different from neighbouring countries. They were to never turn to idols, but only worship God almighty. However, after the death of Joshua, many turned to idols, and the anger of God was kindled against Israel, and many enemies rose against Israel and oppressed them, Midianites being one of them. But, God didn’t completely abandon Israel. He raised Gideon as a Judge and led him to save Israel.
As a commander of the Israelites, Gideon won a crucial battle over the Midianite army, guiding a group of 300 valiant men, as per the instructions of God. He completely trusted God and did not doubt His counsel(ref.Judges 7). After the victory, the Israelites wanted Gideon and his sons to rule over them; but Gideon gave a remarkable response:“I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you. The LORD will rule over you.” (Judges 8:23)
He could have easily taken the position of a king, but he chose to stick to his call from God. As Christian, we must give utmost value to the work assigned to us by God, trusting and following every instruction from God; without seeking any glory from men. We must be humble and faithful to the call of God in our lives.
