He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. (Proverbs 17:27)
One of the first places excellence becomes visible is in the way you speak. Proverbs teaches that the person who has knowledge knows how to restrain his words. This does not mean that a knowledgeable person never speaks. It means that he understands the value of words and does not feel the need to speak about everything.
You don’t have to win every argument. You don’t have to answer every comment. You don’t have to prove that you know everything. You don’t have to make yourself heard in every conversation. Sometimes wisdom is knowing when to speak, what to say, and when to remain silent.
This is particularly important in our generation because there are so many opportunities to speak. We can immediately respond to messages, comments, conversations, and opinions. But being able to speak does not mean that everything needs to be said. An excellent spirit produces discernment.
As your understanding grows, your speech should become more mature. Excellence is not measured by how much noise you make but by the value you bring when you speak. Let your words carry greater wisdom, grace, and purpose.
Prayer:
Dear Father, I thank You for the gift of speech and for Your Word that teaches me how to use my words wisely. Thank You for giving me understanding and discernment. I declare that my words continually communicate wisdom, grace, truth, and love, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
