But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 3:18)
The house of God is a place of spiritual training. When you come to the church, don’t come merely to occupy a seat. Come ready to learn. Come ready to participate. Come ready to receive the Word and understand more about the things of the Kingdom. There are many things happening in a church service that can teach you if you are attentive.
Listen to the announcements. Pay attention to what is happening around you. Learn about the different cell groups and ministry arms and outreaches. Observe how people serve. Participate when there is an opportunity. Ask questions when you need understanding. There is something to learn from every part of the life of the church. You are not simply attending an event; you are being brought into an environment of spiritual growth.
This is why Bible study and meditating on the Word is so important. When we study and understand the Word, we slow down and examine the Scriptures. We study subjects, characters, books, principles, and practical matters. We review what we have learned and build upon it step by step. Spiritual maturity does not come from hearing one powerful message and then forgetting it. It comes through continued learning and application.
Don’t be satisfied with remaining at the same spiritual level year after year. Grow in grace. Grow in knowledge. Grow in understanding. Grow in your ability to serve. Grow in your character. The house of God is one of the places where God has provided spiritual instruction for you. Take advantage of it and become everything the Word of God teaches you to be.
Prayer:
Precious Father, I thank You for the House of God and for every opportunity You give me to learn Your Word. Thank You for teachers, pastors, leaders, Bible studies, fellowships, and every environment through which I receive spiritual instruction. Thank You for increasing my understanding and helping me grow in grace and knowledge. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
