And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. (2 Kings 2:9)
The story of Elijah and Elisha gives us a powerful picture of spiritual transition. Elisha had followed Elijah through different places, but there came a point when they arrived at Jordan. After they crossed, Elijah was taken up, and Elisha entered a new dimension of responsibility and spiritual experience. Jordan became a point of transition in his journey.
In your Christian life, there must also be moments when you move forward. You cannot remain at the same level forever. There are things that must be left behind—old mindsets, old habits, old fears, old excuses, and old ways of responding. Spiritual growth involves allowing the Word of God to bring you into greater maturity.
Sometimes the things that trouble us are not the great obvious problems. They are the little things we keep tolerating. Small compromises. Wrong attitudes. Uncontrolled words. Unforgiveness. Distractions. Secret habits. The little foxes can spoil the vine. You must be willing to deal with whatever is inconsistent with the life Christ has called you to live.
Your Jordan may represent a decisive point of spiritual maturity—a place where you stop looking backward and begin moving forward with greater determination. Don’t keep negotiating with the old life. There is more in Christ. There is more growth. There is more maturity. There is more usefulness in the Kingdom. Cross over into the greater measure of spiritual discipline and excellence that the Word of God calls you to.
Prayer:
Dear Father, I thank You for every place of growth You have brought me through. Thank You for every lesson, every correction, every opportunity, and every season through which You have matured me. Thank You for the grace to leave behind everything that does not agree with Your Word. Thank You because I am moving forward, growing stronger, and becoming increasingly effective in Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
